Simple and pure - piano sounds in Gregorian style

Welcome to White Darkness, a project born out of my deep fascination with the timeless beauty of Gregorian chant. These ancient melodies, rooted in the sacred traditions of the medieval church, possess a unique power to transport listeners to a place of stillness, reflection and transcendence.
In a world that often seems chaotic and fast-paced, Gregorian chants offer a rare opportunity to pause, breathe and connect with something greater than ourselves. Their simple yet profound harmonies have the ability to calm the mind and awaken the soul - a reminder of music's enduring power to inspire.
For this project, I have collaborated with several outstanding contemporary composers, each of whom has created new, meditative and atmospheric compositions in their own unique style, inspired by the spirit of Gregorian chant. These works are not recreations of the past, but a modern reinterpretation of the essence of chant - ethereal, contemplative and deeply moving.

Through this series, I hope to share not only the beauty of these compositions, but also my belief in the importance of bringing Gregorian chant - and the meditative qualities it embodies - back into our lives. This is not just a musical journey; it is an invitation to enter a space of White Darkness, where light and shadow collide and the echoes of the past merge with the present.

Join me on this journey of discovery into the timeless appeal of Gregorian chants and their modern reinterpretations. Let these melodies lead you to a place of inner peace and reflection.

Hochdruck Böhmische

Traditional brass music that is sophisticated, refreshing and dynamic

The formation ‘Hochdruck Böhmische’ was founded at the beginning of 2023 and has pursued a very clear objective ever since: to present traditional brass music in a sophisticated, yet refreshing and dynamic way.

The musicians come from different parts of northern Bavaria and got to know each other partly through playing and partly through music studies. It quickly became clear that we all share the same passion: a passion for Bohemian brass band music. We had already been true to this before (e.g. with Mission Böhmisch and other formations), but we wanted something new: our own formation, our own sound.

As the name suggests, the focus of the repertoire is mainly on Bohemian brass music. For example, we play the ‘current’ arrangements of the Kaisermusikanten (e.g. Almtaler Polka), the Kleine Egerländer line-up (e.g. Spitzbuben Polka) and Blechverrückt (e.g. Verträumte Herzen). Of course, we also present our audience with the classics of Bohemian brass music (e.g. Auf der Vogelwiese, Südböhmische Polka and many more), incorporate our own arrangements and crown our performances with one or two solo numbers.

K36 Big Band

Jazz from Erlangen

The K36 Big Band is a young big band from Erlangen. Under the direction of Alexander Saal, over 30 amateur musicians dedicate themselves to the various genres that big band jazz has to offer. The big band is all about the fun of making music together - we look forward to sharing this with other people at various performances.

The K36 Big Band brings a varied mix of big band music to the stage, from 1930s swing to Latin, funk and rock to contemporary songs. The usual improvisation in the solo parts and the captivating vocal interludes of the female singers are not to be missed! The K36 Big Band has already demonstrated its skills and dedication to jazz in numerous performances. The K36 Big Band has performed several times in concert settings, as well as at the Schlossgartenfest, the Bergkirchweih, at Jazz4Free in the E-Werk, at Christmas markets in Erlangen and Fürth and at the charity dragon boat race at the Erlangen rowing club.

Of course, such an unusual band raises the question of its unusual name. This has to do with its genesis: the big band was originally founded in 2018 by school leavers from Christian-Ernst-Gymnasium. Since then, it has also found many new members outside the school and has grown into a colourful mix of talented amateur musicians. Only two things have remained the same since then: the name and the rehearsal room - K36.

King-Size Juniors

Rock and Swing songs in Big Band style

Homepage

The "King-Size Juniors" are one of the youngest big bands in Bavaria with an average age of just 15 years, consisting of 25 musicians who present rock and swing songs in big band style with great fun and energy. It is always astonishing with what ambition and group dynamics the King-Size Juniors manage to sound really professional for their age. This formation won first prize at the Big Band Competition 2019 in Marktoberdorf and would have represented Bavaria at the nationwide Big Band Competition in Hamburg 2020 if Corona had not come. This young formation is the 5th generation of the music school "King-Size Musics" under the direction of Peter and Markus König (Haselhöhe 2, 92706 Luhe-Wildenau). The concept of "King-Size Musics" is to offer their students the opportunity to make music in a group as soon as possible. With the subtitle "Big Band Academy", the focus of the musical offer, which ranges from jazz, rock and pop to classical music, becomes clear.

The ‘King-Size Youngsters’ is one of the youngest, if not the youngest big band in Bavaria!
This children's big band consists of 31 musicians who present rock and swing songs in big band style with great fun and energy. It's always amazing to hear the playful ambition and group dynamics with which the king-size youngsters manage to sound really professional for their age.

This young formation is now the sixth generation of the ‘King-Size Musics’ music school under the direction of Markus and Peter König (Haselhöhe 2, 92706 Luhe-Wildenau).
The concept of ‘King-Size Musics’ is to offer their students the opportunity to make music in a group as soon as possible. The subtitle ‘Big Band Academy’ emphasises the focus of the musical programme, which ranges from jazz, rock and pop to classical music.

Jean Kleeb (Bärenreiter Verlag)

Compositional dialogue between classical, jazz and world music

Jean Kleeb's World programme sees itself as a compositional dialogue between classical music, jazz and world music. Classical, romantic, ragtime, jazz, samba, bossa nova, salsa, Balkan, minimal music, pop, gospel, atonal, African and oriental sounds are interwoven. The concert will be based on pieces from his 13 published piano albums, which have been created over the last 25 years. In addition to the performance of the pieces, there will be room for improvisation as a resource for all musical ideas. Suggestions from the audience will also be realised musically.

Jean Kleeb is a Brazilian composer, world pianist, choirmaster, cantor and clavichord player. His special idea is to create a dialogue between music from different cultures and times. His compositions build a bridge between world music, jazz, classical, modern and traditional culture from Latin America, Africa and Asia. Many of his works have been published by Bärenreiter (Germany) and Helbling Verlag (Austria).
In his more than 250 compositions, he has used the most important musical genres such as mass, cantata, oratorio, singspiel, symphony, chamber music, song and piano. Kleeb's works are performed by ensembles all over the world. He regularly leads workshops in which he passes on his passion for combining different musical styles.

His works help to promote an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of musical expression and offer musicians and audiences the opportunity to discover new and exciting musical horizons.

Profs Night Big Band

Modern, sophisticated big band sound from swing and Latin to funk and fusion

The 20-piece formation with a saxophone, trumpet and trombone section as well as a rhythm section emulates the orchestras of its great role models such as Thad Jones, Count Basie or Peter Herbolzheimer, whose arrangements are an integral part of the band book. In its concerts, the Profs Night Big Band mainly presents pieces from contemporary big band literature, ranging from swing and Latin to funk and fusion. The arrangements always leave enough room for soloists and the band's singer Rebecca Kunzelmann. The big band is musically directed by Bernhard Eckl, a qualified trumpeter and passionate big band musician. The Profs Night Big Band was formed in 2010 from an ensemble that was to perform once at the first Erlangen professors' concert - the Profs Night. Originally made up of professors and members of the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen, the group quickly took a liking to making music together... and especially jazz. In a short time, the orchestra grew into a classical big band, which has since established itself permanently.

Big band jazz at its finest from Franconia - Gordon Goodwin's compositions in particular drive the musicians under the direction of Matthias Zippel to new peak performances time and again - and provide the audience with an unexpectedly brilliant listening experience.
Let's find together - you and we.
There's really something on the ears here. These jazz maniacs savour the full tonal and dynamic range of their instruments with relish. Away from the usual big band clichés, the band presents itself as a musical surprise package with unusual compositions and arrangements.

WiBraPhon

Wind music - broadly diversified

The WiBraPhon orchestra is primarily intended to provide a home for experienced and motivated musicians who have retained a hunger for new things, in which they can play an active and committed role and develop their musical talents together. The focus is on professional and highly sensitive work on music combined with a wide-ranging musical repertoire. WiBraPhon favours a predominantly soloist line-up in order to preserve the clarity of the composition as intended by the composer. The orchestra has also set itself the goal of collaborating with internationally renowned soloists and working with composers and publishers of wind music literature. The musicians' participation is entirely voluntary. The conductor of the orchestra is Prof Johann Mösenbichler.
